Mercury Free Baby and our message of protecting children from the harms of mercury in dental fillings and vaccines was shared with delegates from all over the globe at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)’s sixth Intercessional Negotiating Committee (INC6) meeting of the Minamata Convention on Mercury in Bangkok, Thailand, from November 2 to November 7, 2014.
The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a legally-binding treaty through which nations from around the world have agreed to reduce mercury usage and pollution. Over 100 countries have signed the treaty, and the U.S. is the first of ten nations that have already showed support for its ratification. UNEP explains that the purpose of the agreement is to “protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury” and notes that the “major highlights of the Minamata Convention on Mercury include a ban on new mercury mines, the phase-out of existing ones, control measures on air emissions, and the international regulation of the informal sector for artisanal and small-scale gold mining.”
The treaty has been developed over the course of six intercessional negotiating committee (INC) meetings held since 2010, with a seventh session planned for this summer. Additional gatherings are held by individual governments leading up to each UNEP meeting. Delegates from Mercury Free Baby have attended all of UNEP’s INC sessions, as well as meetings held by the U.S. State Department in preparation for the INC gatherings.
The goal of Mercury Free Baby’s participation is to encourage world leaders to end the use of mercury in dental fillings and vaccines. While our representatives have worked with others to succeed in having dental mercury fillings included in the treaty, the Minamata Convention only suggests for nations to set objectives to minimize their use. In addition, the treaty does not take any action whatsoever to restrict the use of mercury in vaccines.
These oversights made the work of Mercury Free Baby at INC6 even more essential. Lawyer James Love delivered a meaningful opening statement to the entire UNEP Convention on behalf of Mercury Free Baby, thereby bringing immediate attention to the hazardous consequences of using mercury in dental fillings and vaccines.
Mercury Free Baby also secured a booth in UNEP’s exhibit hall, and it was there that James Love worked with documentary filmmaker Eric Gladen and writer/consumer advocate Amanda Just to raise awareness of the harms caused by mercury in fillings and vaccines. The team distributed hundreds of educational and scientific handouts to INC6 attendees. Having these resources available in English, French, and Spanish was appreciated by many of those visiting our booth. Dentist Dave Simone of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), a co-sponsor of Mercury Free Baby, was especially helpful in spreading the word about the dangers of dental mercury.
By securing two screenings of Eric Gladen’s documentary Trace Amounts as official UNEP side events, the vaccine issue was significantly represented at the conference. [Read more about the film Trace Amounts in the article on the bottom right of this page.] The first screening of the documentary, on Sunday, November 2, was attended by delegates and participants from the U.S., Japan, Uruguay, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Pakistan, Australia, Sweden, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. During the second screening several days later, delegates from a number of African nations (including Nigeria and Zambia), England, India, Iran, Jordan, Russia, among others attended. Eric check out these mechanic service trucks with crane for sale and offered a question and answer session after each of the screenings, and each and every attendee received a packet of handouts from Mercury Free Baby.
Thus, delegates from all over the world visited our presentations and showed interest in the issue, many of them sharing personal stories of friends or family harmed by mercurial medicine. In the end, INC6 made it clear that the message of Mercury Free Baby is urgently needed now more than ever. So, join us in helping parents, communities, and governments stop the use of mercury in dental fillings and vaccines: all children around the globe deserve mercury-free vaccines and dental fillings, as well as protection from mercury-induced harms. Our slogan is supported by an increasing number of scientists, parents, doctors, and now diplomats: “If you want a child as healthy as can be, keep your baby mercury-free!”
